چکیده

Over the past ten years, the use of sociological methods and sociological reasoning have become more prominent in the analysis and design of interactive systems. For a variety of reasons, one form of sociological enquiry, ethnomethodology, has become something of a favoured approach. Our goal in this paper is to investigate the consequences of approaching system design from the ethnomethodological perspective. In particular, we are concerned with how ethnomethodology can take a foundational place in the very notion of system design, rather than simply being employed as a resource in aspects of the process such as requirements elicitation and specification. We begin by outlining the basic elements of ethnomethodology, and discussing the place that it has come to occupy in CSCW and, increasingly, in HCI. We discuss current approaches to the use of ethnomethodology in systems design, and point to the contrast between the use of ethnomethodology for critique and for design. Currently, understandings of how to use ethnomethodology as a primary aspect of system design are lacking. We outline a new approach and present an extended example of its use. This approach takes as its starting point a relationship between ethnomethodology and system design which is a foundational, theoretical matter rather than simply one of design practice and process. From this foundation, we believe, emerges a new model of interaction with computer systems which is based on ethnomethodological perspectives on everyday human social action.

Taking Technomethodology Seriously

The incorporation of ethnomethodology in professional systems development has prompted the call for the approach to move from design critique to design practice and the invention of the future. This has resulted in the development of a variety of mixing pot hybrids that have had marginal impact upon product-based development, whose needs the approach has been configured to meet. This paper sugg...

Studies of Work : Achieving Hybrid Disciplines in IT Design and Management Studies

We explore the relationship between ethnomethodology (EM), ethnography and the needs of managers and designers in industry, considering both ethnomethodological and industrial criteria of adequacy and explicating their relationship through the concept of “audience.” We examine a range of studies in this light, with a view to their possible candidacy as hybrid studies and identify three types of...

The Video Analyst’s Manifesto (or The Implications of Garfinkel’s Policies for Studying Practice within Design-Based Research)

Cast as a manifesto, this chapter presents a set of foundational principles for doing video analytic work in support of design-based research. Our approach draws predominantly upon the literature and methodology of ethnomethodology (EM). EM is centrally concerned with practical reasoning and the procedures (i.e., “methods”) participants (i.e., “members”) employ in making sense of their own acti...

Ethnomethodology as an Influence on Community-Centred Design

Social norms are integral to the success of online communities. This success is predicated on social norms reinforcing accepted community behaviour, marshalling effective communication and, from a semiotic perspective, providing a foundation for the interpretation of signs. Accepting Stamper’s ontological position, we propose ethnomethodology as a theoretical basis for community-centred design....
